Personal Recovery Notes

The following are some personal notes I made early in my recovery, while attending some Christians in Recovery (CIR) meetings.

January 4, 2000 "There is a Solution" - page 23 of Alcoholics Anonymous

"The problem of the alcoholic centers in the mind, rather than the body." (i.e. - reason(s) for drinking... reason(s) for the last -or any- drunk given by the alcoholic is totally insane).

NOTE: To me, this exemplifies a perfect example of how spiritually empty we are. We seek a solution and/or relief in booze instead of God.

We measure our sobriety using time - as opposed to quality. Is this because quality is subjective?

Religion is of man. Spirituality is of God.

Religion is about doing. Spirituality is about BEING.

Religion scares me (fear). Spirituality gives me peace (serenity).

"More About Alcoholism" - page 30 of Alcoholics Anonymous.

Incomprehensible demoralization - I was "demoralized" before I even started drinking. I used alcohol and drugs to anesthetize the pain I felt from the demoralization.

Step 3 - "Made a decision to turn our will over to the care of God, as we understood Him."

Grace and Faith - Ephesians 2:8-10 - FAITH, not works.

Faith is from God - it is His grace.

"But for the grace of God..."

For the future-

I can quit anytime

I'll quit one of these days.

I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

What about today? What if tomorrow never comes?

I've been meaning to...

I was going to...

If you have so much power and control, what are you waiting for? Tomorrow?

What is your desire?

Do you have the desire to quit?

No? Why not?

Yes? What are you waiting for? Power? Control?

"If today is the tomorrow we worried about yesterday, then it follows that today is the tomorrow you swore you'd quit on, yesterday!"

"Life is not a video game that you can start over and replay."

Trusting in God

There is danger (sin) in not believing in God's promises.

Trust that God can and will work in me and others.

Trust in God to take care of things without my involvement.

See 1 John 5:1-5
